While out and about, I recently ran into my ex-karate instructors, Greg & Judy Tierney, It was great to see them again. It has been about 3 years since I had taken karate. They mentioned that they are now doing kickboxing classes and that I might enjoy trying it out! They were very geneerous and gave me a 30 day trial for kickboxing.
I took them up on the offer and had my first kickboxing class today! WHEW! A fantastic one hour workout which was GREAT cross-training for this year's bicycle ride.

01/01/07: UPDATE -------- Happy New Year! Haven't been updating the training log at all since late September because I've been only moderately exercising. Doing some running, a little bicycling, and some workouts at the gym.
It's the new year and time to get serious about training for this summers' bicycle ride that will begin sometime between mid and late July. Nick and I will be doing another fundraising bicycle ride this summer and we're really looking forward to it! Check back for updates. We'll be updating almost daily!

5 mile race today in Marcellus. 48 minutes 43 seconds. This was the third annual MARCELLUS ROTARY RUN FOR THE WOODS to benefit Baltimore Woods. The course took us through part of Baltimore Woods and was a real pretty run. Also, being a graduate of Marcellus High School (1979), it was great to see a few high school friends again and many familiar faces.

2/12/06 - 2/20/06:
Between a sprained ankle (which is doing MUCH better - I can walk normal now) and being under the weather with a FLU, there's been no exercise. A bummer, but I'll be back at it soon!
2/11/06:
4.2 mile run. 41 minutes 6 seconds. For the first time ever, I trip and fell while running today. About a mile into the run, I tripped on a pothole and twisted my left ankle/foot real bad! It hurt quite alot. I walked for the next couple minutes, then finished running the last 3 miles. It didn't feel bad at all while running, but when I got home, it was REAL swollen!
It turns out that it was quite a bad sprain. No running for a while.

1/6/06:
3.3 mile run. 29 minutes 51 seconds
1/4/06:
6.75 mile run today. 1 hour 9 minutes 22 seconds. Today felt real difficult for the first 3 miles, then I was fine! Who knows? Ended up walking for about 3 minutes in the middle of this run. Temperature was high 30's and it rained the whole time. I was soaked, but who cares? It was good to run!
1/2/06:
10 mile bicycle ride on rollers. 28 minutes 33 seconds. 21 MPH average speed. The rollers always make for a faster average speed for me. Although it's not like riding on the road, it's still great training, especially for balance and form!
Before riding, I had an excellent upper body weight lifting workout.
1/1/06: HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
6.9 mile run! 1 hour 8 minutes 23 seconds. Feels good to be "back at it" and exercising. The eye surgery had me down for about 10 days, but I'm BACK! This was the annual "Resolution Run" hosted by the Syracuse Track Club. We started and ended at the Spaghetti Warehouse in Syracuse. The run took us up to the top of James St, through some of the north side of Syracuse, and back to the Warehouse where they had a nice pasta (and chili) buffet set up for the runners!
12/29/05:
4.62 mile indoor bike ride on rollers.
12/23/05:
This "no exercise" is driving me nuts while my eye heals from the surgery. Can't wait to get back at it!
12/21/05:
Had eye surgery today, so I'll be laying low for a few days before much exercise.
12/20/05:
Very short 1.1 mile run. 9 minutes 22 seconds. It was just TOO cold and windy for a long run today.
12/19/05:
Early morning weight lifting workout
12/16/05:
2 mile run. 17 minutes 32 seconds.

12/10/05:
5K (3.1 mile) race. 27 minutes 17 seconds. I ran the Old Tyme Christmas 5K Run in Weedsport, NY. This was a nice run through Weedsport. It was my fourth race and my best time so far (I even won a prize - a nice mug - for coming in third in my age group for men - my first prize ever!). I'm officially addicted to doing these races now!

12/09/05:
Early morning weight lifting workout.
12/06/05:
4 mile run today. A dreadfully slow 39 minutes 48 seconds. Quite cool and windy (and slippery) today. Temperature was about 23 degrees and winds were gusting at 15-20 MPH. COLD!
12/05/05:
1.8 mile run. 16 minutes 30 seconds
12/04/05:
5K (3.1 mile run). 30 minutes 39 seconds. Same route as yesterday. Pretty slippery in some spots. Had to slow down. Temperature was about 25 degrees.
12/03/05:
Mid-morning weight-lifting workout followed by:
5K (3.1 mile run). 30 minutes 55 seconds. Slow time today, but it was pretty snowy and slippery today. Had to run slower in some spots to avoid a serious fall! I haven't done ANYTHING in the way of exercise since Thanksgiving Day! It felt GREAT to get out and run today.
11/24/05:
5 mile race today. I ran the Baldwinsville Kiwanis Turkey Day Road Race - Fun race! Good thing I wasn't really "racing" because my time was real slow, but I finished and it was FUN! My time was 46 minutes 55 seconds.

Almost done
|

Final Stretch!
|
|
11/21/05:
6.75 mile run. I didn't time today's run (although it took a little over an hour). I'm even slower on these longer runs - but just wanted to run for some distance today.
11/20/05:
5K (3.1 mile race). I ran the Jingle Bell run for Arthritis at Onondaga Lake Park today. It was a fantastic day for running. 51 degrees and sunny! This was my second race. I had so much fun at the "Geddes Grunt Run" two weeks ago, I think the "race bug" bit me. I want to run ALL of the races now, eventually working up to the 10K, half marathon, and a full marathon by later next year. My time today was 27 minutes 27 seconds (My best time so far - although I'm not a FAST runner by any means).

2.9 mile run. 27 minutes 50 seconds. Hadn't run since the Geddes "Grunt Run" on 11-06. I had very bad shin splints after that run because I pushed myself pretty hard and my shoes were getting real worn. Some time off from running along with new running shoes made all the difference in today's run! It felt GREAT!

| 46.1 miles today. 2 hours 44 minutes 21 seconds. 16.8 MPH average speed. Biked to Onondaga Hill and met up with John Petrus who joined me for a very hilly and challenging ride down "13 curves" continuing up Cedarvale Road to Route 20. | 10.2 miles. 31 minutes. 19.1 MPH average speed. First day back on the saddle since arriving in Texas. Did a quick 10 mile sprint around the Baldwinsville area. It was GREAT to be back on the bike. I used my Cannondale racing bike today. I'm partial to that bike. It feels good, it's light, and I can really get going on it! Perfect weather for riding today. |

18.5 miles. Winding down the training. Just riding for fun until the ride. The hard part of training is over. Perhaps one more good ride on Sunday and then that's it. Dropped off both bikes at the Bikery for one last set of adjustments before departing for Dallas. Trip starts Tuesday morning and we are READY!
6/23/05:
27.8 miles. 1 hour 43 minutes 51 seconds. 16 MPH average speed. Not enough time for a long ride today, but what a beautiful day! Had some errands to do so I rode to downtown Syracuse, then over to my Camillus office, then home.
6/22/05:
50.1 miles. 2 hours 57 minutes. 17.0 MPH average speed. Beautiful day for riding! Went out to Weedsport, over to Auburn, Marcellus, Camillus and back. Fantastic day!
6/20/05:
54.5 miles. 3 hours 46 minutes. 14.4 MPH average speed. A very hilly route today. Went out through Camillus over to South Onondaga. Took route 80 up to route 20. Headed east on route 20 to Lafayette (some BIG hills on route 20). Then turned around and came back. Felt good to be able to do these hills and still have plenty of energy at the top. All this training is really paying off.
6/19/05:
56.3 miles. 3 hours 20 minutes 53 seconds. 16.8 MPH average speed. A two part ride today. First I went solo over through Camillus to the RE/MAX west office. Upon returning I met up with Nick and we rode another 35 miles together out route 31 to Weedsport and back. He was cranked today and gave me a run for my money! Great Father's Day ride!
6/18/05:
42.6 miles today. Same route as 6-15-05. No stats today cause the bike computer broke. I took pics of Disappearing Lake in Marcellus. Check them out. It's DRIED UP!

Followed the bike ride with a 5 mile run.
6/14/05:
A change of pace today. Started with a real nice 75 minute weight lifting workout at the gym at 6:00am. Then ran 8 miles in the afternoon. Felt good to do something different and it was a beautiful day!
6/13/05:
52.5 miles. 3 hours 15 seconds. 17.3 MPH average speed. Went out route 370 west to Cato, then left on Slayton Hill Road down to route 38. Took route 38 south to route 31 in Port Byron and 31 east back to Baldwinsville.
6/11/05:
16.15 miles today. Forgot to look at the time and other stats. Lots of real estate to do today and little time for riding. Took a quick ride out to Jack's Reef and back.
6/10/05:
60.7 miles today. 3 hours 32 minutes 33 seconds. 17.0 MPH average speed. Very hot and humid day, but I felt real strong and kept a good, comfortable pace. Half of my ride was in the rain (rained quite hard at times). It was so warm and humid, the rain felt good. Went to Fairmount, then Camillus, over to Auburn, to Skaneateles, and back through Camillus to Baldwinsville.
Nick got in a nice 41.5 mile ride today. Our schedule's didn't permit us to ride together today, but we passed each other on Van Buren Road. We waved. He was just getting finished as I was starting my ride. He went to Camillus, through Marcellus to Skaneateles, then turned around and came back the same route.
6/9/05:
50.25 miles today. 3 hours 16 minutes and 8 seconds. 15.4 MPH average speed. A HOT and humid day! Went to Camillus, up Monroe Road, into the village of Marcellus, out Bishop Hill Road to Lee Mulroy Rd. Then over to Skaneateles to Jordan Road and up to Butter's Farms. Butter's Farms is where our "Send Off" party will be on June 28th. This was my first time through that new subdivision. What a nice area! Went on to Elbridge via Jordan Road and over to Jordan. Took Route 31 east to Warners Road and then some back roads back to Baldwinsville. Quite a few big hills today.
6/8/05:
40.5 miles today. 2 hours 42 minutes 47 seconds. 15 MPH average speed. Very hilly ride through Marcellus and into Skaneateles and back. Hot and humid, too - low 90's.
6/7/05:
Two bike rides today.
#1: 26.3 miles. 1 hour 32 minutes 30 seconds. 17 MPH average speed. Nick and I went from B'ville over to Camillus, up Monroe Road, down Lyons Road to Route 174, over to Route 321, down Bennetts Corners Road and back to B'ville. I rode the racing bike and Nick rode the new touring bike.
#2: 12 miles. I took a solo ride on the new touring bike. I put on a bike computer today. The distance is correct, but other stats didn't seem to work. A beautiful day for riding!
6/6/05:
44 miles today. Picked up one of the new bikes and trained on it today! It was GREAT. It's a new Cannondale 27 speed touring bike. This is one of the bikes that we'll be riding to Texas. It gears down so low, I can climb cliffs! Went around the Van Buren, Lysander area (4 times on an 11 mile loop). No bike computer on it right now to keep track of time, average speed, etc. I'll have it on by tomorrow.
I followed the ride with a 5 mile run.
6/4/05:
46.1 miles today. 2 hours 57 minutes 53 seconds. 15.5 MPH average speed. Biked to Onondaga Hill and met up with John Petrus who joined me for a very hilly and challenging ride down "13 curves" continuing up Cedarvale Road to Route 20. East on 20 to Route 80 south into South Onondaga. Continued up Makyes Rd to Young Rd to Harris Rd. and then back to Baldwinsville. Some pics below from the ride:

6/2/05:
77.1 miles today. 4 hours 22 minutes. 17.4 MPH average speed. The weather each day seems to be getting better and better! What a beautiful day! Went out through Jordan and into Elbridge, then into Auburn. After that, I went through some back roads to Skaneateles, then over to Marcellus, into Camillus and back to Baldwinsville. Lots of nice hills today.
6/1/05:
41.4 miles today. 2 hours 19 minutes. 5 seconds. 17.7 MPH average speed. High 70's temp. light winds from the west and sunny all day! Went through many of the hilly area's through Camillus, Onondaga Hill, and Marcellus. A beautiful ride.
5/30/05:
42.6 miles today. 2 hours 24 minutes. 28 seconds. 17.6 MPH average speed. It couldn't have been a nicer day for riding. Went towards Onondaga Hill, down "13 curves", out Pleasant Valley Road (took 2 pics of Disappearing Lake - the water level has gone gone down more), then over to Skaneateles. Headed back on Route 321 to Bennetts Corners Road, through Warners and over to Baldwinsville. Just one flat tire today (it's time for a new set of tires - these have about 2,000 miles on them).
Right after the bike ride, I did a 3.25 mile run. Trying to step up the training now with less than a month before leaving for Dallas!

23.2 miles today. 1 hour 23 minutes 10 seconds. 16.5 MPH average speed. Planned to ride about 40 miles today, but had 2 flat tires on this ride and ran out of time. A beautiful, sunny day!
5/28/05:
Ran the same 3.25 mile course as yesterday. 34 minutes + a few seconds. The running is feeling WAY better than I thought it would!
5/27/05:
First day running. I wanted to try running as a cross-training exercise. It felt a whole lot better than I expected. Ran 3.25 miles straight through (a new record for me - never, ever ran more than a mile in my life without stopping to walk).
5/26/05:
27.8 miles today. 1 hour 39 minutes 19 seconds. 16.6 MPH average speed. Time constraints made for a short ride today. Went through some hilly areas in Camillus. Beautiful, sunny day with temps in the low to mid 60's.
5/25/05:
73.5 miles today. 4 hours 21 minutes 24 seconds. 16.8 MPH average speed. Great day for riding. Clear blue sky, fairly strong and steady winds from the north, and low 60's. Went west on route 31 to Savannah, route 89 north to Wolcott, route 104 east to route 370 east back to Baldwinsville.
5/21/05:
43.4 miles today. 2 hours. 30 minutes. 17.7 MPH average speed. Check out the pics below - the picture of my bike computer shows a temp of 104 degrees. The temperautre maxed at 108 degrees on this ride while riding up "the wall" again. Went out Camp Wisdom Road around Joe Pool Lake again, up Lake Ridge and into the hills in the Valley View/ Lake View area's. A nice, but HOT ride! .

I HAD to take a picture of this. Check out the Temperature! 104 Degrees!

34.2 miles. 1 hour 54 minutes. 2 seconds. 17.3 average MPH. Second day in Texas. Temperature reached 98 degrees while riding. Warm temps like this give an added element to training! I chose the route with the most hills today and found a hill they call "the wall" in this area south of Dallas. Not bad at all though. I'm used to hills in New York that are MUCH, MUCH bigger and steeper. But when you add the heat to the equation, it makes for a different kind of training experience - lots of SWEAT!
5/19/05:
First day in Texas. Thanks to B&B Bicycles in Cedar Hills, TX, I had a nice TREK racing bike donated for training while I'm here. It was all equiped with a computer so I could keep track of the mileage, the time, the average speed and other stats. It's WARM here with temperatures in the mid 90's.
25.5 miles. 1 hour 24 minutes 51 seconds. 17.2 MPH average speed. I searched for the route with the most hills which took me down Camp Wisdom Road, over to Lake Ridge, around Joe Pool Lake, and then into the the Lake View/Valley View area.Nice ride and WARM!
5/18/05:
Intense workout at the gym today. Flew to Dallas tonight for some meetings over the next three days. We are getting fund raising activities and events set up for the week of our arrival on our bicycles in Texas in July
5/17/05:
52.7 miles today. 2 hours 52 minutes 58 seconds. 17.8 MPH average speed. Nice ride through Camillus into some back roads around Marcellus, over to Skaneateles, back through Camillus.
5/16/05:
50.7 miles today. 2 hours 46 minutes 40 seconds. 17.3 MPH average speed. Nice ride. Took route 370 west to Cato, then left on Slayton Hill Road down to route 38. Took route 38 south to route 31 in Port Byron and 31 east back to Baldwinsville.
5/15/05:
25.5 miles. 1 hour 31 minutes 37 seconds. 16.6 MPH average speed. Lots of climbing today through many of the hilly area's in Camillus; Bitters Road, Breed Road, Hunt Road, Monroe Road and back towards Baldwinsville.
5/14/05:
20.3 miles. 1 hour 9 minutes. 17.6 MPH average speed. Time constraints made for a short, but nice ride today through the Warners and Camillus area. .
5/13/05:
50.2 miles today. 2 hours 51 minutes 50 seconds. 17.2 MPH average speed. Nice ride. Went out route 370 west to Cato, then left on Slayton Hill Road down to route 38. Took route 38 south to route 31 in Port Byron and 31 east back to Baldwinsville.
5/12/05:
Took a couple of days off from riding (yesterday and today). Had a nice, intense workout at the gym today - a little change of pace.
5/10/05:
65.5 miles today. 3 hours 53 minutes 25 seconds. 16.8 MPH average speed. Sunny again and nice and warm, in the mid 80's. Went through Camillus, down "13 curves" to Pleasant Valley Road. Then took route 174 out to Otisco lake. Went down the east side of the lake and back up the west side, through Marcellus and back to Baldwinsville. Got some nice pictures today (you can click on the images to make them larger).

73.2 miles today. 4 hours 12 minutes 45 seconds. 17.4 MPH average speed. Fantastic day for riding. Clear blue sky, fairly light winds from the northwest, and low 70's! Went west on route 31 to Savannah, route 89 north to Wolcott, route 104 east to route 370 east back to Baldwinsville.
5/7/05:
35.7 miles today. 2 hours 11 minutes 44 seconds. Had a nice 17.4 MPH average going until the 17th mile. At the bottom of "13 curves" I heard a loud "POP" from the back end. It was a broken spoke in the rear wheel which made for a slightly wobbly 18 mile ride home. Overall trip ended at a 16.2 MPH average. Although I ended at a shorter distance than planned, it was a beautiful day and a real nice ride. For the first time in a long time, I had to stop for a cattle crossing (on Pleasant Valley Rd.) - check out the pics (you can click on the images to make them larger). One of things I love most about riding a bike is that you get to see SO much more than driving in a car.

52.7 miles today. 2 hours 57 minutes 46 seconds. 17.7 MPH average speed. Nice ride through Camillus, over around Marcellus on many of the back roads, Skaneateles, and back through Camillus.
5/5/05:
44.4 miles today. 2 hours 58 minutes 34 seconds. 14.9 MPH average speed. Biggest hills for me so far this year. Started out in Westvale, went up Harris Rd. over to Bussey, Tanner Rd to Makyes into South Onondaga and then up Route 80 to Route 20 (next to Beak & Skiff Orchards). Continued west on Rt. 20 to Skaneateles, then Rt. 321 to Rt. over into Camillus and ended in Baldwinsville. I've been looking forward to doing a route like this with alot of pretty big hills, and although my overall average speed was pretty slow, I felt real strong and good. It felt great to feel OK after those hills! Time for more hills like this soon!
5/4/05:
27.9 miles today. 1 hour 29 minutes 47 seconds . 18.6 MPH average speed. Took a pretty flat route today out to the Jordan area and back through Memphis. I went all out and as fast I could.
5/2/05:
| 33.2 miles today. 1 hour 56 minutes 52 seconds. 17.0 MPH average speed. I'm not the fastest cyclist out there, no doubt, but finally I hit a 17 mph average today! Yeah! Very cool today & I should have dressed warmer. About 46 degrees with a strong headwind from the northwest and quite a bit of rain. A good ride though, out to Cato, then over to Jordan and back towards Baldwinsville. I ran into Mr. Peacock today. Check out the pics below - you can click on them to make them larger. When I saw him, I stopped and he put his feathers up. I don't think he liked me being so close, but he looked real neat!
|
5/1/05:
46.3 miles today. It started out sunny, but I ran into alot of rain along the way. No big deal. Rain or shine, we ride! Nice ride back through "13 curves" then over to Skaneateles and over through Camillus. I took a few pictures today. Check them out - you can click on the image to make it larger.

4/29/05:
30.2 miles today. Winds were pretty light and that's always nice. Took a nice trip out through Jack's Reef, Eno Point, Memphis, over to Warners and into Camillus. 1 hour 50 minutes - 16.4 MPH average.
4/28/05:
Cold and windy day with some scattered rain. 37 miles today
4/27/05:
Unfortuneately, no time for riding today. The real estate market is BUSY - and that's a good thing! So I spent a good portion of the evening hours at the gym doing weight-lifting and climbing the stairmaster for some cardio cross-training.
4/26/05:
A GREAT ride today and quite a workout! A total of 80.5 miles. Biked over to Skaneateles, then around the lake (going down the west side and back up the east side) and then back from Skaneateles. A very strong headwind ALL the way down made for a REAL workout! But the ride back was fast and sweet - real nice. | 4/25/05: |
Kind of cool and sort of rainy out today but managed to get in 57 miles.
4/24/05:
Had a great workout at Bally's today. Got in alot of weight training followed by a 35 minute intense stairmaster workout (my personal favorite cardio machine). This comes after a day of doing absolutely NOTHING in the way of exercise yesterday. They say that a day off every now and then during training is good - I took 2 days off this week.
4/22/05:
41.1 miles today. Did alot of hills today. They are starting to get easier now. It's a great feeling to climb real long/steep hills and feel GOOD at the top, especially when I was huffing and puffing at the top of the SAME hills only one month ago!
4/20/05:
Same exact route as yesterday - 24.2 miles. Pulled out all the stops and went as fast as possible. Nick rode with me today and gave me a run for my money! A good, fun, fast ride!
4/19/05:
Time constraints made for another short, but nice ride today - 24.2 miles and feeling great!
4/18/05:
The weather each day has gotten better and better. Low 70's and sunny today. A perfect day for riding. Nick and I left from the village of Skaneateles and rode around Skaneateles Lake. Went down the west side and back up the east side for a total of 40.2 miles.
4/17/05:
Did a 16.25 mile sprint. Strong headwind. 18.2 mph average. Final time was 53 mins 10 secs
4/16/05:
51 mile total today. Nicest day of the year so far! John Petrus joined us for about half of the ride and it was great to ride with him.
4/15/05:
Nick and I rode just under 20 miles, mainly cause I was still totally wiped out from yesterday. We'll make up for it tomorrow!
4/14/05:
60.4 miles today. Thru 13 curves out to the end of Otisco Lake. Great ride with a real strong headwind all the way home!
4/13/05:
Took a couple days off from riding and worked out at the gym doing some strength training for variation.
4/10/05:
50.5 miles today. Haven't done over 50 miles 2 days in a row in a LONG time! Temp was low 50's starting out and high 50's by the end. Took a pretty flat route out rt.31 to Montezuma and back. Light winds helped make for a good pace today - one of my better average MPH so far - 17.6. Of course, it felt good until at about mile #40 I was passed like I was standing still by an unidentifiable man (he was riding too fast) riding a blue TREK bicycle. Man, he was HAULIN' and I was going 21 MPH at that point! That's ok - I'm working up to it. All in all, a great ride for me: 2hrs 53 mins.

A fantastic day for riding! A bit cool this morning (high 40's), but sunny and beautiful. Rode to Onondaga Hill and met with friend John Petrus. Continued riding with John down 13 curves to Pleasant Valley Rd into Marcellus. Went south to Route 20, then turned around and headed back the same route. Temperature up into the high 50's by the end of this ride and a total of 51.25 miles today.

Time constraints made for a shorted ride today, but a nice swing out to Jacks Reef, back Rt. 31 to Warners Rd. into Warners, then Brickyard to Jones and into B'ville. 23.9 miles in total.

First day riding in the rain so far this year! It started out dry, but by the time I got to Jack's Reef the rain started. Not a bad thing, though. We're training "rain or shine" - no excuses! After going to Weedsport, back through Elbridge, over to Camillus (stopping at my office for more water), and then back to Baldwinsville, it ended up at a 45.1 mile ride. And I was an absolute wet and muddy MESS at the end! That's OK. A little water and mud will never hurt. A great ride!

The nicest day of the year so far and a great day for riding! The temperature was in the mid 60's (a heatwave it seemed) and it was sunny! After yesterdays' hilly ride, I was in the mood for something a little flatter. From B'ville, I went to Jack's Reef, then out to Weedsport, then back to B'ville (with a few sideroads thrown in) for a 37.6 mile ride.

It feels so good to feel spring in the air! Makes you want to ride! Ok, I thought I was in the mood for hills today. Went out Van Buren Rd. to Bennett Rd in Camillus to W. Genesee Street. First big hill of the year was the dreaded Monroe Road going from W. Genesee St. up to Howlett Hill! I'll say that the first hill on Monroe wasn't too bad, but the second one took some special concentration and ALOT of energy, but it felt SO good to make it to the top! No problem (just alot of huffing and puffing)! After going Howlett Hill and thru Marcellus, then back to B'ville, it ended at a 30.7 mile ride. And nevermind how long it took - I made it and it felt good! We'll be talking "time" in about month.
